This book provides interesting and fun activities and information that will help children learn the ABC’s of Mindfulness: Attention, Balance, and Compassion. The book is divided into the following chapters:
CHAPTER I: WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?
The first chapter discusses the ABCs of Mindfulness. After reading the chapter, the students can give ABC examples from their own life experiences.
CHAPTER 2: MINDFULNESS 101
The second chapter offers three lessons to help students better understand mindfulness, as well as a lesson that instructs students to set weekly mindfulness goals.
CHAPTER 3, 4, & 5: ATTENTION, BALANCE, COMPASSION
The lessons in these three chapters can be taught in any order depending on the needs of the students. For example, the chapter on attention would be helpful to students with ADHD. The chapter on compassion would benefit individuals or an entire class that may need to work on relationships with peers. Students who are experiencing changes in their lives due to divorce or death would benefit from the chapter on balance. Select the lesson or lessons that are appropriate for your students’ needs. Then print the workbook page(s) for each participating student. If several lessons are selected, print, collate, and staple together the pages to make a mini workbook for each student.
CHAPTER 6: MINDFUL MINUTES
This chapter offers suggestions on how students can "sneak" mindful moments into each day, and helpful reproducible Mindful Minute Reminder Cards to distribute.
CHAPTER 7: GAMES & MORE!
After the students have completed the majority of the lessons, they should have enough understanding about mindfulness to be able to complete the games. This section includes:
- Mindful Word Games (crosswords, word searches, word scrambles)
- Mindful Quiz Show (Powerpoint)
- Mindful Spinners
- Mindful Bingo (30 printable bingo cards)

About the Author:
Joan Zientek is a marital and family therapist. While semi-retired, she has maintained a small private practice in Oakbrook, Illinois. She spends time volunteering and is currently on the board of a local charity. Previously Joan has also been a consultant to many school districts and service organizations in and around Chicago as well as nationally. During that time she has conducted seminars on various family and human-relations topics and developed and taught a social skills training program on emotional intelligence called FOCUS ON EQ.
As a former teacher, Joan has taught on the elementary, high school, and university levels. Joan received an M.A. in education from Saint Xavier University, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational psychology from the University of Chicago. She is a gradate of the Family Institute, Institute of Psychiatry, of Northwestern Memorial Hospital Medical school.

The ABC's To a Mindful Me is so organized and comprehensive that teachers, social workers, counselors , AND parents will love it! Children can learn to use valuable daily-living skills from the hands-on activities and games (which, btw, are easily reproduced from the included CD). I especially like the manual's usability for work with individuals, groups, and classrooms. Although this is written for grades 3-6, I would use these lessons in social skills training even for middle school and some high school students with special needs. The only negative I can find is that it did not come out sooner! Joan H., MSW, LSW
A Must-Have Book for Every Counselor, Teacher, and Parent!

This book provides an easy and fun way to teach kids about Mindfulness. As a former elementary school counselor/social worker, I know what kids get excited about, and many of the lessons and activities in this book will capture their interest. The CD is an added bonus. I actually learned a lot from the book, too! You get a lot for your $$$.
